Photos from Hawaii

Want to share some of the photos from the beautiful Hawaiian islands, post-haste - so here goes:

Once we cleared security we were greeted by these folks in native Hawaiian dress

Hawaiian Dancers in the Entrance Hallway of the ship, the Norwegian Pride of America

Singers on the Aft (back) deck eleven preparing us for sail away

Spectacular Honolulu sunset - the photo does not really capture how the mountain edges were gold-rimmed as the sun passed under the cloud layer.

Sculpture of two characters from Hawaiian children's storybook

Feeding the birds, Honolulu Style

Friends surfing together

This surfer had just dropped his surfboard off a dock and was diving in after it...

Flowers spotted on my early morning walk along the Waikiki strip

This shot was taken from our 17th floor balcony using a telephoto lens.

View of the pool deck from the very highest deck.  I got up early to watch our approach into Maui's Kahului port.

Lavender Scone - awesome snack, yeah

our lunch spot - this is on a ranch where their general store serves burgers from their homegrown cattle, grilled outdoors.

beautiful Hibiscus flower

Rich with some of the wonderful "Maui Gold" pineapple provided by Marilyn, our guide for the day

the previously mentioned burgers

yes those are turtles...HUGE sea turtles

Ever wonder what a pineapple looks like when it's growing?
stopped here for a quick tasting.  They have a sparkling rose that's quite delicious!  Available to order online

Our fun guide, Marilyn, serenaded us during lunch with her ukelele (pronounced OOkuhlaylay

Compare the size of those sea turtles to that Rottweiler!!!

Statue of Fr. Damien at Holy Rosary Church.

this is a fruit tree trained to have the branches bent low to the ground for ease of harvest!

Protea bouquet.  The petals feel like smooth plastic...

French Lavender blossom - identifiable by the two "rabbit ear" petals at the top

Little pergola with bench at the lavender farm, looking out over the valley for which Maui is called "the Valley Isle"

this was our view while sampling the lavender scones

Nice Harley outside of the ranch general store

Maui Gold pineapples, perfectly ripe.  Our guide, Marilyn, told us that pineapples "fly free" - airlines cannot charge for checked pineapples!

the dining room where we've been enjoying breakfast.  My travel tip - seek out the sit-down restaurants (vs. the buffets which are a madhouse!) when sailing on these big ships.

I loved the silhouettes of the people watching the sun set into the sea
Japanese wedding party.  Tour agencies in Japan sell wedding packages - Hawaiian weddings and honeymoons are very popular and this is not an unusual scene to run across here in Hawaii.
Locally produced trumpet mushrooms, wood grilled with chopped onions and served with a romesco sauce

My Dessert - Mango Bread Pudding with ginger ice cream and ginger syrup.  Fabulous!  The ginger had a nice little kick and added a great complementary flavor note to the sweet mango.
Nice shot taken by hotel staff member - one instant on the lanai and I realize I didn't know how much I love Hawaii!!!

Pretty sure I've found Rich's happy place!
On the balcony of our hotel room, just after arriving - now that I'm in Hawaii I need to remember "Lanai"!
Waikiki Beach

We arrived in Hawaii early in the afternoon after a 5 hour flight from San Diego. A short shuttle ride later we were at our hotel, The Aqua Park Shore located on the southern edge of the Waikiki Strip, across the street from the Honolulu Zoo.  We quickly settled into our room and headed out exploring.   My pc is acting a bit wonky so I'm going to write the narrative and add/caption photos later; they will not likely be in sequence...

Our hotel has an ABC store on the ground floor.  For those who may not have traveled to Hawaii, ABC is the ubiquitous convenience store found all over Hawaii.  Seriously we walked past almost a dozen during our half mile walk to the restaurant!

Our hotel is across the street from the beach, so we crossed and started walking north on the Waikiki strip.  Things were starting to wind down with respect to beach activities while at the same time ramping up for Friday Night on the strip.  It's so nice to see so many people out for a stroll - families, tourists, locals - everyone enjoying the natural beauty of this gorgeous spot.

Our walk took us to the Hula Grill, a beachfront restaurant located in the Outrigger Waikiki hotel.  We had a very early reservation and were delighted to find that they offer a happy hour fixed price menu - salad, entree and dessert - for $27 (available M-F between 4:30 and 5:45.)  The restaurant is on the second floor of the hotel, over the pool and beach, and there were Hawaiian musicians playing just below the open windows.  What a delightful way to start our first day here!  The food was very well prepared and it's nice to see that locally grown produce is showcased on the menu.

After our  meal, we had a leisurely stroll back down Waikiki Strip to our hotel, stopping in a couple of shops, including Le Sportsac which (for me) brought back memories of being here with my kids over New Year's, 2005-2006, and being schooled by my daughters about how hip Le Sportsac was - and even better, getting "mystery bags" - brown paper bags with an assortment of sportsacs inside.  I also remember the saleslady gleefully encouraging everyone to peek inside the brown paper bags...but I digress.

Today we will be relaxing in our hotel for a bit, then heading over to the Pier of Honolulu to board our ship, the Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America, on which we will sail to Maui, Hawaii and Kauai during the next seven days.  Can't wait!
